Work Experience

I am nearing the end of my work experience at Howies. I have been here for nearly two weeks now. It is great to work with Chris Vandrill and he showed me some useful stuff on illustrator and explained to me how things work here. The whole team is lovely and welcoming and Fridays is cake day! They even have got there own fantastic print shop, where all t-shirts are created in house. Tomorrow I will be joining Dave for a “Creative Day” I am not sure what that involves but sounds interesting and inspiring.

Keeping Fit

At the moment I am doing work experience with a company called howies in Wales. Its in the middle of nowhere and the area is absolutely beautiful! Camping at an amazing spot overlooking the see. Coming into work on bike feels great, especially with all this sunshine we got at the mo. The only problem is diging my bike out at the end of they day!

Snug - the Travel Hoodie

Hooded garment for travellers, addressing the need for a more comfortable and safer way of sleeping whilst on the move.

Trends show that an increasing number of people travel and sleep in airports and train stations but also on their mode of transport. Professional surfers, snowboarders and skaters for example travel a lot to compete at events around the world and use the (potential wasted) time spend travelling to catch up on some sleep.

Providing the traveller with the opportunity to gain a better sleep whilst on the move means they can use the time spent on the destination more productively.

Snug acts as a sheltering environment for sleeping by providing the wearer with an inflatable neckpiece integrated into the hood that supports the wearers neck. Attached into the hood is a face shield to block out light and give privacy to the sleeper. The hood has got a snug fit so it will stay tight on the head in windy conditions, but also when performing fast downhill manoeuvres. Snug comes with earplugs to block out unwanted noise and has got a small compartment to store them safely. Furthermore it has got a 100 decibels safety whistle that acts as an audible crime deterrent. It also has intergrated hand warmer mittens to provide a cocoon like environment for resting.

100% MAPP merino was chosen to construct the garment because of its technical properties but also due to its sustainable manufacturing process. The fabric promotes balanced body temperature regulation and its naturally odour repellent meaning it needs to be washed less.

K-Guards 1.3

To achieve the best possible design, the K-Guards 1.3 have been developed and tested in close teamwork with professional and novice skateboarders.

The pads that are currently on the market do not fulfill the functions needed by the slide skater. Due to advanced spin manouvers close to the ground the skaters are in need of robust protection without eliminating the knee movement.
Two-layer system allow the user to adjust the thickness off the padding.
Removable and adjustable slide cups lead to a long lasting pad.

Materials: Bamboo linen (the natural fibre eliminate smell) SpaceTec padding (the fabric allows a lightweight and breathable protective layer). Memory foam for added protection and comfortable fit). Codura and UHDP for robust and long lasting knee protection.

The Hugsters are big playful cushion monsters

They come empty and the user has to stuff them with soft goods such as spare pillows and blankets.

The monsters have got big arms to give the person using them a comforting hug.

The arms can be taken off for fun 'pillow' fights.

Sole Socks

Sole Socks are organic cotton reflexology socks designed to relax the body from head to toe

Massage nodes stimulate reflexology points located at the bottom of the sole. They are deliberately placed to help sooth common pain in feet, knee, spine and head.

The project was developed in a team of three and was designed to go with the DesignX - Naked Product Range - that was shown at the Milan furniture Fair in 2007

Bendy Wood

I am currently sanding, cutting, drilling and most of all bending local Cornish oak into beautiful peaces of art. The boys at sixixis are super rad and show me how to shape creative lines out of wood. Before the oak can be bend we steam it and fix it to special by Tom designed jigs. Sometimes small once sometimes big once, depending on what is being created. Sixixis is a young start up business, taking home prizes for creativity, innovation and sustainability. Read a great article about chaos theory, steam bending giant oak chairs and more on getwoodworking.com
